Naomi Jane Ellis
July 8, 1935 - September 13, 2015
Naomi Jane Spencer Ellis passed away at her home on September 13, 2015 at the age of 80. A lifelong resident of Port Gibson, she was born the eldest child to the late Horatio Nelson Spencer and late Jane Newlin Spencer on July 8, 1935.
Mrs. Ellis was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Port Gibson and was faithful choir member. She was a graduate of Port Gibson High School and later in life attended and graduated from Hinds Community College in Raymond, Mississippi.
An excellent cook and hostess, and author of a treasured family cookbook, her life was filled with taking care of a large family that has a rich history in Claiborne County dating back to 1828. She also enjoyed her custom framing shop and providing drafting services for many in Port Gibson Later in life; her formal garden was a source of pride and joy, out of which she gladly shared flowers and smiles alike.
Known as Momma, Granny, Naomi Jane, Jane and Nomi to family and friends, she touched many lives in her 80 years and was never afraid to fight the good fight for what she believed in. In recent years she led the charge in defending the destruction of historic Church Street in Port Gibson and this legacy will live on for future generations.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Nicholas Michael Ellis, brother, S. Newlin Spencer and sister, Vera S. Garrett.
Survivors include sons, Dr. Michaels B. Ellis (Alice), Dr. Jared S. Ellis (Shannon) and daughter Julie E. Smith (Rick); Brothers, H. Nelson Spencer (Barbara), John D. Spencer (Nona), Sisters Ruth S. Willis (Raymond), Sarah S. Starnes (Tim), sister-in- law, Faye Spencer, eleven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Services include a private family burial at Wintergreen Cemetery in Port Gibson, Mississippi at 9:30 am on Saturday, September 19, 2015.
Visitation is the same day from 10:00 am to 11:30 am at the First Presbyterian Church of Port Gibson, and a memorial service at the church at 11:30 am. There will be a family meal following at the church. The church is located at 605 Church Street I Port Gibson.
In Lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial gifts be made to First Presbyterian Church of Port Gibson or to your favorite Charity.
